IDYDC introduced the microfinance programme in 1999 in Iringa urban as a consequence of working with street children and disadvantaged youth. It was observed that many children and youth in Iringa region ran away from their homes because of poverty and lack of basic needs, while others dropped out from schools.
Since 2005 IDYDC has been operating the Micro-credit activities in seven districts of Iringa region, which are respectively Ludewa, Njombe, Makete, Mufindi, Kilolo, Iringa district and Iringa Urban. Due to limited funds, in 2013 the program continued and squeezed the area of operation so as to have full financial control and management of the loan portfolio invested to clients. The program now implements loan activities in the districts of Iringa urban and Iringa rural.
